We want to help you feel as comfortable as possible. If you’re planning to wash clothes, we recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before the shift starts in case it’s a busy day. Keep an eye out for volunteers in bright orange t-shirts and let them know it’s your first visit – they’ll give you a rundown of everything you need to know. FAQs Who we help Anyone is welcome at an Orange Sky shift. You can expect to find a friendly face to welcome you when you arrive. We help people who are sleeping rough, need an extra hand doing their laundry, or simply want to stop by for a chat. In line with our mission to positively connect communities, we aim to create an inclusive and welcoming environment on shift through genuine and non-judgemental conversation. Learn more What we do We provide a free laundry service (and in some locations, showers) for everyday Australians doing it tough. Our focus is creating a safe and supportive environment for those in the community experiencing homelessness, hardship, isolation or loneliness. Top Tips If you’re planning to wash clothes, we recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before the shift starts in case it’s a busy day. Our last load typically goes on an hour before the end of the shift. For example, if our map tells you an Orange Sky service will be running from 6pm – 9pm, the final basket will be going in the machine around 8pm. That way you’ll always have your fresh, clean laundry returned before we wrap up! You don’t need to book or bring detergent – just come say hi to one of our friendly volunteers at the start of shift. Let them know it’s your first time, and they’ll be very happy to show you how it all works. Scroll for more FAQs How much does it cost? Our service is completely free to use. Do I need to provide identification to use the service? No, there is no requirement to provide identification to use our service. Our volunteers will ask for a first name to track your washing in the queue. If you don’t feel comfortable using your real name, you can use a nickname or a pseudonym. Do I need to make a booking? No, you don’t need to make a booking. Some of our shifts can get busy, so we recommend arriving a little earlier than the shift time so you can secure your spot in the queue (if there is one!) Do you provide detergent or soap? For our laundry shifts, liquid detergent is automatically dosed into the machines every time a washing cycle starts, so there is no need to bring your own. For shower shifts, we supply you with a towel and a bathmat, and we have a 2-in-1 shampoo and shower gel available to use inside the shower. How do I give feedback on my shift experience? We want to make sure all friends of Orange Sky have the opportunity to provide feedback on their experience using our services. To let us know how you went on shift with us, or suggest areas for improvement, please complete our Shift Experience Feedback Form . How long does it take to wash and dry my clothes? It takes around one hour to wash and dry your clothes. If your belongings are a little heavier (such as jackets or towels) they may need to remain inside the dryer for a little longer to make sure they are dry.
